Bamboo Sumi by Sandy Haight. Framing and staging by James Ross

Whenever I sell an unframed painting I ask for a photo of how they chose to frame the piece. James Ross purchased my sumi painting of bamboo on gold flecked rice paper from my Etsy.com store and totally wowed me with his presentation, creating a whole wall feature on which to mount the art.  I feel honored to have a part in his creative construction for a special part of his home in Clearwater, Florida.  So unique!

6th annual Signature American Watermedia Exhibition

"Billowing" watercolor. Frame size 37" x 29"

This SAWE show opens today in Fallbrook, CA and runs through March 22nd.  My painting titled “Billowing” of the blooming white rhododendron seen above, was juried into this show which is open to signature members from any nationally recognized watercolor society.  The juror was the renowned Stephen Quiller, and I thank him for accepting my work among the 88 paintings. It’s the first time I’ve entered a show that was too far away to deliver and pick up the painting or to go to the reception. Now that I’ve faced the challenges of packing and shipping a large piece, maybe I’ll consider others. So, if you are in the San Diego area please stop by the Fallbrook Art Center and check the show out for me! Thankfully, there’s an online CATALOG to see the art from the comfort of home.

Enso Cat Potholder Gifts

Wednesday, January 7th, 2015

In December I tried my hand at fabric painting of a simple sumi design of the Enso circle cat that sold well as framed art at one of my shows this past year.  It turned into quite a production to make 24 and a challenge for my improvisational sewing skills.  Modeled after a simple potholder that I had and loved from Hawaii, I thought it would be an easy solution for creative holiday gifts and a chance to use up some leftover fabric scraps.  The painting part went well, using black and red Jacquard Textile Color and Extender (to make it more fluid), and was actually easier to control on the “To Dye For” cotton fabric than on slippery rice paper.  The assembly and sewing seemed like it would be straightforward but I ended up with a Wabi Sabi, far from perfect but functional gift. Still, they were well received.

Happy new year!  Meow…

Cannon Beach gallery-Northwest by Northwest

Monday, October 13th, 2014

"Deep Heart" - Watercolor © 2013 Sandy Haight. Framed size: 19 3/4“ x 16 1/2”

What a pleasure to deliver a couple of my Floralscape paintings to Northwest by Northwest Gallery in Cannon Beach, Oregon to hang in their space among other painters and sculptors with unique views of nature. Just walking in from the intimate outdoor sculpture garden is a feast for the senses. When I visited in July, it was clear that this gallery is where my paintings would fit to offer to the public. Cannon Beach a beautiful coastal resort town where the beach rules with its ethereal presence of sea stacks, crashing surf and ever changing skies. The village is full of galleries, charming shops and tasty eateries and is a big draw for art lovers from all over.

Along with “Deep Heart”, my rose painting above, they are showing the large painting of an iris, “Diva Divine” that was juried into the Northwest Watercolor Society Waterworks show last fall.

“Billowing” is my latest large painting and will be featured in the window display of The Art Study gallery in University Village, Seattle, starting this weekend concurrent with a shopping center wedding promotion event on April 27. It’s framed and prominently displayed, along with a large print of another one of my paintings of a similar palette, below, introducing me as their new artist.

"After the Shower" Frame size 29" x 23" © Sandy Haight. All rights reserved.

The Art Study gallery now has available archival giclee prints of 11 of my Floralscape paintings. Matted and ready for standard sized frames, they offer an infusion of color to brighten the gray NW climate. The reproductions are hard to distinguish from the actual paintings thanks to the amazing photographic and printing skills of Cary Cartmill of Digital Canvas NW. The window display will be presented into June or beyond. Click here for the location of The Art Study within the lively shopping center. And, go for a walk outside and see the billowing rhodies at their finest. I don’t have to go far. The actual rhododendron that was the inspiration for this new painting, is in full bloom right now, adorning my garden view.

"Morning Splendor" - Watercolor on Arches 140# cold press - Frame Size: 20.75” x 24”

My favorite painting, and one of the first of my “Floralscape” series has been juried into the International Open show sponsored by the NW Watercolor Society.  Juror Donna Zagotta selected 62 paintings from 485 submissions to be on display from April 19, this Saturday, through June 6, 2014 at:

American Art Company
1126 Broadway Plaza
Tacoma, Washington 980402

If you love watercolor, here’s a chance to see a wide range of styles and subjects in that medium.  The gallery is spacious and easy to find if you plan an art outing to Tacoma this spring.  I’ll be at the reception and award ceremony on April 26 from 2-4:00 pm, a Saturday afternoon.  With so many artists and their families & friends, these are very lively, often crowded affairs.

“Morning Splendor” is based on a beautiful orange azalea blooming in May at the Washington Park Arboretum Japanese Gardens. To see more paintings from this series visit my fine art web site.  Enjoy the beauty of this blooming season, wherever you are!

Alex Ballenger

Alex Ballenger is an art student on leave to figure out what she ultimately wants from art school.   She has big aspirations for a career in art.  By assisting various artists in different ways, she’s getting a broad, hands on look at the creative and business side of the lives of artists and illustrators.

Alex joined my studio in January to help me with the daunting tasks of managing and updating the image files for my illustration and fine art web sites, my Workbook online portfolio and my Etsy.com store. Her familiarity with photoshop and Mac computers made it an easy fit, and, she’s a fast learner.  It took me way too long to realize that I needed help and to let up on my do-it-ALL-myself philosophy of self employment. She’s handling the tasks that have been easy for me to put off and avoid, but by showing up twice a week I’m able to keep her busy and know that my internet marketing is getting cleaned up, on track and ultimately, expanding.  Thanks Alex!

"Cozumel Shell" - framed watercolor - 21" x 27"

I’m pleased to be part of the Waterworld show at University House in Seattle featuring art that interprets various aspects of our world of water.  Besides painting with watercolor, qualifying many of my paintings, and living in watery Seattle, the subject of this painting came from a beach on the windy side of Cozumel, Mexico.  A smooth yet broken spiraling shell was washed up onto shore to nestle among the rough coral.  See the postcard below for show information.  RSVP by the 22nd and come to the reception for delicious food & wine, live music and lots of artists and their friends. June Sekiguchi puts together great shows for ERA Living including many artists assuring a variety of interpretations of the theme. I hope to see you there!

My newest and largest painting, Diva Divine, was chosen to be part of the Northwest Watercolor Society’s Waterworks show which opens today at the Tsuga Gallery in Bothell, WA. This iris sang out to juror Michael Reardon and I’m honored! Of 234 watercolor submissions by member artists, 50 were chosen to be exhibited for a month, until November 22.  I became a signature member of this watercolor society, NWWS, last year after being juried into the requisite number of shows.  The reception with awards is Thursday October 24 from 6-8pm. I’d love to see you there!

“Diva Divine” – New Flower Painting

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

"Diva Divine" © 2013 Sandy Haight. 27 5/8" x 20.5"

I just added a large new painting to my Fine Art web site, the first full sheet sized painting of this series.  Looking into a blooming iris with its constellation of sparkles and patterns, its fluff of golden beards, and its richly veined purple and blue petals its easy to get lost as if in an other worldly landscape. The iris sings. This diva is divine.

I’m so excited to introduce this new series of paintings that have kept me busy this past fall and winter, bringing lots of color into that somber time of year in the northwest.  I loved working on these and I hope it shows.  It’s a big exhibit for me featuring nine framed paintings all together.  I hope you can drop by the reception or during the following month to take a look and celebrate the blooming of spring.  Or see them online on my new gallery page.

Sandy O’Connor has a realistic eye for the beauty of the ocean & forest landscapes.  She describes an “emotional connection (to) natural light and deep shadows”, and her work conveys a sense of quiet serenity.

Come to the reception if you can on May 4th from 6-8:00pm to say hi, have some refreshments and see the various selected expressions of Being Human. Scroll down for the announcement.

These paintings come close to my own sense of being human… as a mother portraying my daughter’s engagement romp, and as a grandmother to Kali Love, and watching their new family grow (with healthy foods). I share this with you from San Francisco where I’m celebrating Kali’s 4th birthday! No more stroller shopping. She rides a bike now!

New Montana License Plate

Monday, February 4th, 2013

Friends of the Wild Swan sponsored license plate

If you drive through Montana, you quickly notice a wide variety of license plates on the vehicles you follow or walk by in parking lots.  Any organization in the state can sponsor a license plate to promote and raise funds for their cause giving a new customer over 125 choices at the DMV. Look here at just the available wildlife plates. I was contacted by Steve Kelly, a board member of Friends of the Wild Swan, and Wild Rockies Alliance who, as a gallery owner and artist himself, was in charge of putting together the license plate. I was thrilled that he wanted the subtle elegance of a sumi painting of a bull trout to represent the wilderness and wildlife protections they advocate. After painting dozens of trout, this image was chosen then assigned a blue-grey color.

Bull Trout-1 © 2012 Sandy Haight

I enjoyed working on the design as well, following a template with drill holes, tab and alpha-numeric spaces, consulting with the graphic designers in the prison, then watching, by way of Steve, as they enlarged the state name, lightened the trout even more than the 50% requirement and added a borderline over the course of several months.  Now, I wish I lived in Montana to see the plate on the road.

Here are some of my other sumi trouts that we considered. All are available for purchase.
